International Schools in Cape Town - What you should know

Various schools offer primary and secondary school education for international children, in general from pre-school to final school leaving exams. Some offer also pre-school education and kindergarten facilities at either the same premises as the primary school or collaborate with a variety of approved pre-primary care centers.

School fees for the Cape Town international schools vary widely. In many schools, siblings discounts and discounts for annual payment are available. Keep in mind, that at some schools also charge seperate fees for textbooks and school outings. School transport facilities might not always be readily available. Charges for external after-school care programmes may apply as various schools do not include full day tuition and only offer morning classes. Occasionally holiday clubs are offered. And please remember, most schools in Souths Africa ask for a registration and admin fee when providing acceptance letters for your study visa application. Deposits, which are sometimes refundable, apply at all Cape Town international schools. All foreign students, without having permanent residency or citizenship in South Africa, must apply for a study visa. Read more here.

Why choose an international school?

International schools offer internationally highly recognised exams and diplomas such as the International Baccalaureate (IB), the International Cambridge exams (IGCSE and AS/A levels), the German Abitur, French Baccalaureate, or other similarly recognised school leaver's certificates.

These schools often provide a multicultural environment where usually many third culture kids (TCKs) are pupils. Children can often interact with classmates from their home country or other expat kids, sometimes it is even possible to communicate also in their mother tongue. Remember, that a child usually acclimatizes faster and you as parent get to meet other parents who have similar backgrounds, interest and experiences.

The transferability of international curriculum makes further relocations easier and will provide the continuity in education which many expats require. It is generally highly recommended to register an expat child in a school offering teaching in your mother tongue or your home country's curriculum. Alternatively it is recommended to have the child attend an international school that teaches the highly recognised Cambridge International curriculum as this will help your child when your next international move comes up again.
